2019: Endorsements fever grips Buhari, Atiku

Countdown to 2019 presidential battle formally begins

With a view to securing maximum leverage ahead of the 2019 polls, an endorsement fever has presently gripped the camps of incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Within the frenzy, scouts, foot soldiers and even the candidates themselves are frenetically scouring the length and breadth of the nation and beyond in search of critical stakeholders, opinion moulders and power brokers that they are vigorously persuading to publicly lend their voices to their aspirations for the topmost office in the land in the forthcoming February 2019 presidential contest.

President Buhari is running on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC and Atiku is running on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

In the past few weeks, there has been a spirited battle for the Eastern vote. While Prof Ben Nwabueze and several other Igbo leaders endorsed the PDP candidate, President Buhari’s handlers have been able to secure some support from among others, the leader of the UPP, Chief Chekwas Okorie.

On Sunday, the leader of the South South and Middle Belt Elders Forum, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark explained that leaders from both groups were presently rooting for the PDP candidate on account of his long-time advocacy for the restructuring of the federation which tallies with the standpoint of the leaders.
