Analysis: Dino Melaye’s fights have just begun
By John Eche
Following the final declaration of results from the thrice contested senatorial polls to elect a representative for the people of Kogi West, it is evident that the stormy petrel of the Senate, Dino Melaye, has lost out in this season.
With his primary nemesis, Senator Smart Adeyemi of the APC being declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Dino’s bets now are to approach the courts or accept the verdict as it is.
This notwithstanding, it is clear that his fights may only have begun. A very deep thorn in the sides of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, of which he had been an initial gladiator, Dino has long attracted the wrath of many of its leading lights across different theatres.
In his home Kogi, there is no love-lost between him and Governor Yahaya Bello. And at the federal level also, his closeness to former Senate President, Bukola Saraki and strident criticism of the Buhari administration has since marked him out as one with whom the administration is indeed not very well pleased.
As things stand now, will Dino be persuaded to beat a retreat and desist from trenchant criticism of the administration? Or would he continue and indeed be emboldened by his ‘seemingly new status’ of ‘not having anything to lose’ to go all out and become a full-time critic of the ruling government, somewhat?
But there are implications for both positions. A most controversial political player in all ramifications, whatever path Dino decides to toe going forward now is almost guaranteed to be interpreted in varying dimensions.
Surely, Dino’s fights have only just begun.
