Apathy, boycott, allegations of malpractices mar council polls

A considerable show of voter apathy, expressions of disinterest and boycott of the process by several political parties as well as allegations of malpractices may have marred the local council polls in Lagos and Ogun States on Saturday, The Difference reports.

In some polling units monitored in both states, materials and personnel did not arrive until well into the afternoon.

There was also the issue of many parties being generally disinterested in fielding candidates for the contest even as the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP pulled out of the process in Ogun State.

There have long been widespread complaints over the continued need for local government elections in Nigeria, given that ruling parties almost always have full sweep victory in the contests.
