Concern mounts over depleting ranks of activists

By John Eche

Concern is mounting across Nigeria over the depleting ranks of radical, political and civil society activists, The Difference can report.

This is coming on the heels of the passage at the weekend of the spokesman of the Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin and the immediate past West Africa Director of Ford Foundation, Innocent Chukwuma.

While Odumakin reportedly succumbed to respiratory complications after earlier surviving a COVID-19 scare, Chukwuma’s cause of death is being associated with blood cancer.

Both were reportedly in their mid-50s.

Remarked the lawyer and former Chair of the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, Anselm Odinkalu:

‘Chidi Odinkalu
@ChidiOdinkalu

….just a matter of months: Anyakwee Nsirimovu Wisdom Durueke Yinka Odumakin Innocent Chukwuma A generation of selfless struggle & sacrifice….’
On his part, the Public Interest Law practicioner and former President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Barrister Abdul Mahmud described the recent passages as quite hurtful.

‘Great Oracle

@AbdulMahmud01

What a terrible Easter. Losing two comrades and friends I shared trenches with – as students leaders, human rights and pro-democracy activists – is crushing. Yesterday it was Yinka Odumakin. Today, it is Innocent Chukwuma. Both hurts. InnoEasi, rest in power’
For former Kaduna Senator, Shehu Sani, Chukwuma’s loss, lke that of Odumakin just before him is indeed that of a patriot
‘Senator Shehu Sani
@ShehuSani

Innocent Chukwuma; another tragic loss of a patriot. Death hath taken away one of the brightest. May his Soul Rest In Peace.
