Observers accuse ruling APC of planning to undermine democracy, constitution
By Akpo Ometan
Concern is mounting in Nigeria over the possibility of a life presidency gambit in the next few months.
This is following a declaration by Lawal Yahaya Gumau, the All Progressives Congress candidate in the Bauchi South Senatorial bye-elections taking place today (Saturday) that should he be elected, he will work with other lawmakers to make this desire come true.
It will be recalled that the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari had been in the forefront of the opposition to the bid by the camp of former President Olusegun Obasanjo to amend the constitution and secure a third term for Obasanjo in 2006.
Former military leaders, Ibrahim Babangida and Sani Abacha had equally been rumoured to have had life presidency ambitions in the past.
