Eagles opening match loss riles Nigerians

Concern mounts over future prospects of team

By Tasie Theodore

Nigerians have understandably been riled by the national team, the Super Eagles’ opening match 0-2 loss to Croatia.

Taking to social media, they have spared no effort in expressing their outrage over the team’s disappointing performance with a lot of them putting the blame most squarely at the feet of the team’s chief handler, Gernot Rohr.

Equally quite painful for Nigerian commentators is the fact that the opening goal in the match was an own goal by Nigria’s own Etebo which reminded many of the 1978 own goal conceded by the defender Godwin Odiye.

The team next engages the national teams of Iceland and Argentina in a group that observers have since labelled as ‘the group of death!’
