Speaker reads resignation letter in parliament
By John Eche
Apparently in a bid to avert an almost inevitable impeachment exercise, Zimbabwe’s embattled President, Robert Mugabe, Tuesday afternoon, threw in the towel and gave up the fight to retain his 37-year old position.
This position was communicated to the nation by the Speaker of Parliament at a session that was to see the first stage of formal impeachment proceedings being executed on the deposed leader.
Wild jubilation has since broken out all over Zimbabwe even as the nation awaits the formal return of exiled Deputy President Mnanagawa to succeed the ailing leader.
The opposition is however insisting on an inclusive national government even as the fate of next year’s previously scheduled elections continues to hang in the balance.
