We have to return to our people – NLC

By Nsikan Ikpe

Hopes of an early end to the nationwide strike called by the Nigerian labour movement on Wednesday were aborted as a hurried invitation of the leadership of the mainstream Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC to the seat of the federal government at Abuja failed to result in the calling off of the industrial action.

The meeting was at the behest of the Chief of Staff to the President, Mr. Abba Kyari.

Pleading a need to return to its people, the labour leaders told the Chief of Staff that it was not within its powers to unilaterally call off the strike.

NLC, TUC and other labour associations had called the strike to press home their demand for an upward review of the current minimum wage of N18, 000.00 to a new proposed figure of N65, 000.00.
