Lawmaker tasks FG on youth empowerment

Trains 65 youths in computer skills acquisition

A lawmaker who represents the Oshodi/Isolo Constituency 1 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Honourable Olusola Sokunle, has advised the Federal Government of Nigeria to intensify its efforts in the area of youth empowerment and social development, saying that relevant government agencies and ministries should better collaborate to empower youths in relevant and productive technology skills.

Hon Sokunle, who gave this advise, at the graduating ceremony of the 3rd Batch of the “Hon. Sokunle Computer Training Empowerment Scheme” held in Oshodi, Lagos, explained further that Federal Ministry of Communication and Technology, Federal Ministry of Youth and Social Development and National Directorate of Employment (NDE) can collaborate to empower youth through the execution of virile empowerment plan which focuses on training youths on ICT.

The lawmaker stated that the time to reel out his achievements is not ripe as he will never relent in empowering the constituents and facilitating more state projects to the constituency.

He, however, advised the graduands to use the skills and knowledge acquired to create wealth for themselves and the society at large by tapping from all opportunities that come their way in the economy.

In his comment, a Community Leader, Mr Ayegba Joseph, stated that in the past years none of the representatives of the constituency had ever initiated the idea of such scheme to empower large numbers of the constituency, saying that beneficiaries should use the skills learnt positively to develop the society.

Joseph stated further that he has never met the lawmaker before but always heard of his contributions to the development of the constituency.

” I have never met you before but I have always been hearing of what you are doing and what you have done in our constituency. Sir, continue your good work”, said Joseph

The Computer Scheme Instructor, Mr Olasunkanmi Taiwo, disclosed that the training comprises three skills ( Desktop Publishing, Business Accounting and Computer Engineering), saying that the focus of the training was not only to make the graduands good computer gurus but also to be good Business Accountants who can manage the financial activities of their companies.

Taiwo urged the graduands not to relent in the skills and knowledge they have acquired during the training but also to continue to seek for more knowledge in computer was a new technology where skills evolve every time.

One of the beneficiaries of the scheme who spoke on behalf of the 3rd Batch graduands, Aisha Oladipupo, disclosed that during the training she was able to secure a job as a Secretary with a law firm through the skills and knowledge acquired from the scheme, saying that the scheme has exposed her to various opportunities through which she can expand her coast.

Oladipupo advised her colleagues to explore every available opportunity to put to test the skills and knowledge acqiured so that they will never forget them, stressing that there are many companies looking out for computer skilled personnel.

She eulogised the lawmaker on the scheme, stressing that it is a means of liberating their families from poverty.

A total of sixty five youths benefited from the 3rd Batch of the empowerment scheme.
