Influential voice in the #ENDSARS campaign should take a bow

By Tajudeen Hamzat

Segalink may not be the most visible name in your rural hamlet today but the Nigerian people need to thank him and other very resolute campaigners to tame police brutality and judicial abuse in the country on account of their immense contributions towards the realization of the announcement Tuesday, from the office of Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, ordering an immediate review of the operational modalities of the controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS.

Driving their advocacy essentially on social media and through citizens-convened fora in meeting halls and venues, the campaign has seen very strident exposure of many alleged atrocities reportedly committed by men of the Police Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, and accompanying advocacy to #ENDSARS.

Today progress has been secured with the Presidency finally weighing in to order a detailed examination and overhaul of the SARS structure but vigilance would yet be required towards ensuring that the gains of the #ENDSARS campaign continue to be pursued until the outfit or its replacement becomes the full embodiment of best practices in global policing.

Responding to news of the breakthrough, the netizen tweeted:

We WON Guys! Time to build a new. The is real. Congrats to as we begin to reform. Out with the Old and welcome the New. 👏🏼👏🏼

We join him and others in celebrating this much needed advance even as we wait for more.
