The newly elected Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Wamkele Mene has said that Africa must win with AfCFTA, notwithstanding the challenges on the way.
Speaking directly to the current challenge of the Coronavirus pandemic, the South African diplomat tasked the people of Africa to see the ongoing spread of the pandemic as more of an opportunity than a crisis.
He was speaking shortly after a formal swearing in session to mark the commencement of his term in office as the pioneer AfCFTA Secretary General and which was held at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
“Through the AfCFTA we have an opportunity to reconfigure our supply chains, to reduce reliance on others and to expedite the establishment of regional value chains that will boost intra-Africa trade…In the next few weeks, I will initiate discussions on this issue with the Commissioner for Trade & Industry and our technical partners UN ECA and UNCTAD,” Mene stated.
The AfCFTA Secretariat is located in Accra, Ghana.
