The Nigeria Book Fair Trust, NBFT has said that it is pleased with the coming into effect of Nigeria’s recently signed Copyright Act.
In a statement of response to news of the formal signing into law of the legislation that was drawn up to amend the earlier decree promulgated during the military era, NBFT Chairman, Mr. Dare Oluwatuyi affirmed that the contents of the Act were well received by stakeholders in the book trade and it was their hope that its implementation would also help to address some of the graver challenges being encountered by practitioners.
‘The Nigerian Book Fair Trust has received very gladly the news of the signing into law of the Nigerian Copyright Bill and wishes to commend President Muhammadu Buhari and the Nigerian people for this landmark initiative.
This is because the new legislation offers and introduces very significant leeway in the continuing drive to protect the intellectual property of Nigerian creative sector players of which the book ecosystem features most prominently.
We equally note the great potential of the law to help in promoting the climate for innovation overall, as well as boosting the capacity of the book trade to contribute even greater volumes of revenue and lawful employment to the Nigerian economy and for Nigerians.
We note that the new law equally lays the ground for the restoration and improvement of the image of Nigeria as a nation that is yet demonstrably desirous of improving it’s copyright climate and make bold to affirm that it also has great potential to encourage more foreign investments in the creative industry even as it enhances the country’s international reputation.
We equally laud the National Assembly for it’s role in ensuring the passage of the bill and it’s now coming into effect.
Finally, we pledge our support for all efforts geared towards the successful implementation of the new law and affirm that all of our constituent member groups would do likewise.
