New Nollywood release, Shanty Town, stirs controversy

A new Nollywood flick, Shanty Town is stirring controversy among the viewing public barely one week into its release, The Difference reports.

The movie, a Netflix production, which stars A-list acts like Richard Mofe-Damijo, Ini Edo, Chidi Mokeme and Nancy Isime, is cast as a crime thriller and focusses primarilly on the story of ‘three Lagos-based hustlers who unite to wage war against the biggest and most ruthless crime ring.’

Chichi Nworah is the producer of the show that was created by himself and Xavier Ighorodje.

One of the controversial points being raised in the public at the moment has to do with what some have described as the extravagant display of nudity and the use of body doubles.

But the producer says they have only tried to be as realistic as possible and that the focus should rather be on what they have achieved in the flick:

“It is at once different as it is familiar. The tale of redemption will especially resonate with audiences familiar with the grit and hustle mentality of Lagos, and indeed other fast-paced and vibrant cities around the world. We are spotlighting the underbelly of the city, and bringing to life the various character dynamics that exist beneath the cover of everyday “normal life,” thus telling a truly fresh and compelling story.”

Some of the other notable cast are Nse Ikpe-Etim, Shola Shobowale, Shaffy Bello, Ali Nuhu, Uche Jombo, Zubby Michael, Yaw Naija, Omowunmi Dada, reality TV star Mercy Eke, Shola Sobowale, Regina Daniels, Judith Audu, and P-Square’s, Peter Okoye.
