Nigeria: Authorities in quandary over Twitter suspension

By John Eche

The authorities in Nigeria are trapped in a state of quandary at the moment as to how to proceed with its action announcing the suspension of the operations of the social media microblogging platform, Twitter.

According to feelers gleaned by The Difference, at the heart of the challenge is what has come to be seen as the widespread rebuffing of the suspension order from within the country with many continuing to use and patronise the platform.

‘It is indeed a very difficult place that the authorities are caught in. If they proceed with arresting twitter patrons within the country, how many can they arrest and in what facilities would they be held? Where is the judicial system that would be deployed to prosecute them, one commentator queried.

Nigeria’s Justice Minister, Abubakar Malami has however continued to insist that violators of the suspension order would yet be prosecuted.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo
