Season of alignment and re-alignment underway

By Akpo Ometan
Three weeks to cliff-hanger elections in the country, Nigeria’s presidential hopefuls are traversing the length and breadth of the country in a frantic search for votes.
And it is also proving to be a season of alignment and re-alignment with notable developments taking place at a frenetic pace.
One such development is the stepping down from the race of Madam Oby Ezekwesili, a former Minister of Education and until recently the presidential flag-bearer of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, ACPN.
Announcing her decision, Ezekwesili who had also been very active in the Bring Back Out Girls movement, said she was standing down to help the process of bringing about a coalition candidate to take on the establishment APC and PDP.
Coming on the heels of Ezekwesili’s statement, another candidate, Fela Durotoye of the Alliance for New Nigeria has equally signalled his willingness to stand down in favour of a mutually agreed coalition candidate should he not be the desired choice.
The presidential polls hold on February 16, 2019.
