South Africa: Zuma goes to jail

By John Eche

South Africa’s Constitutional Court has sentenced former President Jacob Zuma to serve a 15-month jail term after finding him guilty of contempt of court.

Zuma had been undergoing trial in a lower court and had been quite difficult, if not obstinate there.

The trial and sentence is being seen as a vote of confidence on the independence of the judicial system in South Africa. However, it is also being expected that this development would have political implications for incumbent President, Cyril Ramaphosa who has had a no love-lost relationship with Zuma and his supporters in the ruling African National Congress, ANC party where both political gladiators belong.
