The United States Embassy in Ethiopia has faulted claims that it was involved in the emergence of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed as leader of the Horn of Africa nation.

The claim was made by Sebhat Nega, a former leader of the Tigray Peoples Liberation Front, TPLF, one of the internally contending wings of the ruling Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Democratic Front, EPRDF.

Nega had spoken at a conference held in Mekele University.
