West Africa: Democracy on the rocks

The shrill notes from the UN event in New York this week notwithstanding, many in West Africa know the truth: democracy is on tenterhooks in West Africa. And it is troubling.
While the leaders rose from their parley promising to place sanctions on those close to the renegade junta in Guinea, if history is our guide , very little is expected to come out in real terms. From Mali to Burkina Faso to Guinea, democratic reversals have been the situation.
